EGYPT'S Brain Bee

This is the first Neuroscience competition to be held in Egypt as a part of the International Brain Bee competition. Alexandria Neuroscience Committee (ANC) is proud to be the current Egyptian chapter coordinator in collaboration with the neuropediatrics and neuropsychiatry departments of the Alexandria University Faculty of Medicine.

أول مسابقة عن علوم المخ والأعصاب تقام في مصر كجزء من المسابقة العالمية انترناشونال برين بي​. لجنة الاسكندرية لعلوم الاعصاب هي المنظم الرئيسي للمسابقة في مصر بالتعاون مع قسم الأمراض النفسية و العصبية وقسم الأمراض العصبية في الأطفال بكلية الطب بجامعة الاسكندرية

Who can join the competition?
Any Egyptian student, currently in a high school in Egypt within the age range of 13 to 19 years old is allowed to join. All high school systems are accepted (thanaweya 3amma, STEM, IGCSE/GCE, American, German or any equivalent). If you are just starting high school you are eligible to join. If you are within the age range but not yet in high school, then follow the competition this year and you can join when you become a high school student. If you finished high school before registering, even if you are within the age range, unfortunately, you can’t participate.

مين ممكن يشترك في المسابقة؟
أي طالب أو طالبة مصري الجنسية, حاليا بيدرس/بتدرس في المرحلة الثانوية و السن مابين 13 و 19 ممكن يشارك سواء ثانوية عامة علمي أو ادبي , ثانوي بريطاني أو امريكي أو الماني أو أي مساق ثانوي معترف بيه من وزارة التربية و التعليم في مصر. لو لسة في اعدادي, تابعوا المسابقة السنة دي و المسابقة حتتكرر كل سنة و اشتركوا لما توصلوا المرحلة الثانوية. لو خلصتوا الثانوي و دلوقتي في كلية, حتى لو السن يسمح, للاسف مينفعش تشاركوا في المسابقة.

What will the competition be like?
The main competition is in the form of 3 phases, although it can differ slightly from one year to another.

Phase 1: online exam on the book Neuroscience: The science of the brain.

Phase 2: online exam on neuroanatomy, neurohistology, clinical cases.

Phase 3: The students with the top 10 scores are invited for a final exam that includes a written part, a practical part on neuroanatomy, neurohistology, clinical cases and an oral exam part in front of a panel of judges specialized in Neuroscience. The competition is held in English.

المسابقة حتكون عاملة إزاي؟
الشكل الرئيسي للمسابقة يتكون من ثلاثة مراحل, مع بعض الاختلافات كل سنة

المرحلة الأولى: امتحان اونلاين علي كتاب Neuroscience: The science of the brain

المرحلة الثانية: امتحان اونلاين علي اجزاء عملية في علم التشريح و علم الأنسجة و تشخيص أمراض

المرحلة الثالثة: امتحان عملي علي الاجزاء العملية و امتحان شفوي امام لجنة من الحكام متخصصين في علوم المخ و الاعصاب. المسابقة تقام باللغة الإنجليزية. 

When and where will the competition be held?
Registration for the competition usually starts in October/November every year. The first and second stages are usually held during December/January and January/February, respectively. The third stage is usually held during March/April in Alexandria.

المسابقة حتقام امتى و فين؟
التسجيل في المسابقة يبدأ عادة في أكتوبر/نوفمبر. تقام المرحلة الأولى خلال شهري ديسمبر/يناير و المرحلة الثانية خلال شهري يناير/فبراير. تقام المرحلة الثالثة في يوم خلال شهر مارس أو ابريل بالإسكندرية. 

What to study for the competition?
The competition questions will be based on one textbook Neuroscience (Science of the brain)  that can be downloaded for free through this link.

Online course
To help you study, a series of online lectures are prepared by professors, graduate students and senior undergraduates affiliated with several universities. Please note that the lectures are only intended to help and should not be depended upon as the only source of study. It is intended to help you to study at your own pace.

كورس الإنترنت
للمساعدة على المذاكرة, بنقوم بتجهيز كورس على الانترنت مجانا للمشتركين. المحاضرات حيلقيها مجموعة من الاساتذة, و طلبة دراسات عليا و طلاب بكالوريوس من جامعات مختلفة. نحب ننبه إن المحاضرات حتكون للمساعدة فقط و لا يجب الاعتماد عليها كليا للمذاكرة. هدف المحاضرات مساعدتك على المذاكرة بالسرعة المناسبة ليك/ليكي.

Study group
Registered students will be added to a study group where they can ask questions and interact with other students and instructors about the study material to assist with your studies.

مجموعة الدراسة
الطلبة المشتركين حيتم اضافتهم لمجموعة دراسية على الانترنت من خلالها يقدروا يسألوا اسئلة و يتناقشوا مع كل الطلبة و مع المحاضرين للمساعدة على المذاكرة.

In what language will the competition be held in?
The competition will be held in English because the international competition is held in English, so the winner should have a basic grasp of the language. If you struggle with the language, post any difficulties you face in the study group once you join and we will try to assist as much as possible. Further, you can use the Arabic version of the book "Neuroscience" to assist with your studies. During the exam, we will take into consideration your level of language proficiency. Your final grade will be based on your scientific knowledge only but you will be expected to answer in English as much as possible.

المسابقة حتقام باللغة العربية ام الإنجليزية؟
المسابقة حتقام باللغة الانجليزية. السبب هو إن المسابقة العالمية حتقام بالإنجليزية و الفائز/ة اللي ممكن ي/تشارك من مصر لازم ي/تكون بي/بتعرف انجليزي. لو عندك مشاكل في اللغة, ممكن تكتب/ي المشكلة أو الجزء الغير مفهوم في المجموعة الدراسية أول ما يتم اضافتك ليها و حنحاول نساعدك في الفهم قدر المستطاع. كتاب (neuroscience ) متوافر مجانا باللغة العربية, ممكن تستخدمه للمساعدة على فهم الكلام في النسخة الإنجليزي للكتاب. متقلقش/متقلقيش, وقت المسابقة حناخذ في الإعتبار مستوى اللغة و حنحاسب على مستوى المعلومات العلمية فقط ولكن لازم تجاوب/تجاوبي بالانجليزي على قدر المستطاع.

What are the prizes?
The best participants will receive numerous prizes including the opportunity to join research and clinical training in the field of clinical neuroscience within Egypt. The first winner might have the chance to join the International Brain Bee, which is held in a different country every year in conjunction with a major neuroscience conference. Unfortunately, we currently can not guarantee financial support for the winner every year. However, we thrive to find a sponsor every year and so far have succeeded in securing funds for the winner every year.

إيه هي الجوايز؟

أحسن المشتركين حيكون ليهم جوايز عدة منها المشاركة في ابحاث أو تدريبات اكلينيكية عن علوم المخ و الاعصاب في مصر. الفائز/الفائزة في المركز الأول حيكون ليهم الفرصة للمشاركة في المسابقة العالمية اللي بتقام في دولة مختلفة كل عام بالتنسيق مع أحد المؤتمرات العالمية. للأسف ليس بوسعنا ضمان المساعدة المادية للطالب أو الطالبة الفائزين للمشاركة بالمسابقة الدولية كل عام. ولكن احنا بنعمل جاهدا للعثور على الدعم المادي للفائز كل عام و حتى الآن نجحنا في دعم كل الفائزين في الأعوام السابقة.
